چکیده

We present a detailed theoretical study of the ultrafast quasiparticle relaxation dynamics observed in normal metals and heavy-fermion materials with femtosecond time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. For normal metals, a nonthermal electron distribution gives rise to a temperature~T! independent electron-phonon relaxation time at low temperatures, in contrast to the T-divergent behavior predicted by the two-temperature model. For heavy-fermion compounds, we find that the blocking of electron-phonon scattering for heavy electrons within the density-of-states peak near the Fermi energy is crucial to explain the rapid increase of the electron-phonon relaxation time below the Kondo temperature. We propose the hypothesis that the slower Fermi velocity compared to the sound velocity provides a natural blocking mechanism due to energy and momentum-conservation laws.

Influence of Interface Thermal Resistance on Relaxation Dynamics of Metal-Dielectric Nanocomposite Materials under Ultrafast Pulse Laser Excitation

Nanocomposite materials, including noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host medium, are interesting because of their optical properties linked to surface plasmon resonance phenomena. For studding of nonlinear optical properties and/or energy transfer process, these materials may be excited by ultrashort pulse laser with a temporal width varying from some femtoseconds to some hund...

Quasiparticles near quantum phase transition in heavy fermion metals

We have shown that the Landau paradigm based upon both the quasiparticle concept and the notion of the order parameter can be used to explain the anomalous behavior of heavy fermion metals. Exploiting this paradigm and the fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) we show that this anomalous behavior is universal and can be used to capture the essential aspects of recent experiments...

Fermion Damping in a Fermion - Scalar Plasma

In this article we study the dynamics of fermions in a fermion-scalar plasma. We begin by obtaining the effective in-medium Dirac equation in real time which is fully renormalized and causal and leads to the initial value problem. For a heavy scalar we find the novel result that the decay of the scalar into fermion pairs in the medium leads to damping of the fermionic excitations and their in-m...

Quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in heavy fermion compounds.

We present the first femtosecond studies of electron-phonon (e-ph) thermalization in heavy-fermion compounds. The e-ph thermalization time tau(ep) increases below the Kondo temperature by more than 2 orders of magnitude as T=0 K is approached. Analysis using the two-temperature model and numerical simulations based on Boltzmann's equations suggest that this anomalous slowing down of the e-ph th...

Many–body Correlation Effects in the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optical Response of Confined Fermi Seas

The dynamics of electrons and atoms interacting with intense and ultrashort optical pulses presents an important problem in physics that cuts across different materials such as semiconductors and metals. The currently available laser pulses, as short as 5 fs, provide a time resolution shorter than the dephasing and relaxation times in many materials. This allows for a systematic study of many–b...
